Carnaval in Cajamarca

"Carnaval in Cajamarca!!! Said to be one of the best in Peru and it has been a blast!

Several days of parades, music (mostly just one song over and over again 😄) water and paint fights and partying. Yesterday started with a cold shower in candle light because there was no electricity in the whole city, the reason being that the things they build for the parades are so tall that there's a risk they hit the electrical wires and cause accidents in the the rainy weather. So instead of controlling the size of the parade pieces they just cut off electricity for the whole day!! 😂

The main parade yesterday went on for hours and was amazing with people putting so much effort into their costumes and the atmosphere was wonderfully cheerful despite the occasional rain. We got soaking wet, not from the rain, but the serious water fights on the streets for which our Finnish-Swedish-Canadian team was totally under-armed. Luckily(?) we missed the paint throwing day which was on Friday. The parade went on for hours and in the evening after a change of clothes and dinner we reeeeally didn't feel like getting wet again... You know it's not like the waterfights in Thailand with 35°c, it gets COLD! And no rain poncho protects you from the buckets of water poured on your head! 😄 So we figured it's probably much the same as last night in town and ended up having our private party drinking rum and watching Borat at the hostel 😁 Today at least the morning looks sunny and it's time to try and get to know the city outside the parades and parties (we might still buy waterguns though)"

Exceptionell beskrivning av en fantastisk dag av Hanna Terävä!
